![]() ![]() "The Scalloped SB 0.68 is maybe the best stainless steel base plate that I ever have used - or currently own".Īnd - I say that as someone who loves more 'aggressive' OC razors. It delivers a fantastic shave with a rather unique feel" "The OC 0.95 is a great base plate that 'feels' more aggressive than it is - maybe due to the semi-cage design. It's hard for me to truly compare the base plates as not only is there a difference in blade gap but also in design - but I will say this: Two passes later I have a very close shave and have experienced one of the most enjoyable shaves in quite some time. I do feel that it is "milder" than the 0.95mm plate but don't let the word 'mild' here fool you into thinking that it's less efficient. The same sensation when going against the grain - no resistance, no fear of nicks or cuts. I noticed I had missed a patch right under my chin but with two short passes over the area it was clean shaven. The shave was smooth, clean, efficient and highly enjoyable. Maybe a tad more shallow but regardless the angle came natural and not something I had to consciously dial in.Īt the end of the first pass I am, admittedly, in awe. The angle is very similar - if not the same - as with the OC. I find myself moving the razor 20-30% faster than I do with its OC cousin. There is some very clear audible feedback but not as 'loud' as the OC base plate. Lathered up some Fitjar and started the morning shave. No blade loading issues and the blade aligned as straight as can be. Plopped a fresh Astra SP blade into the razor this morning - I like using the Astras as they seem really consistent to me and I know them well enough now to be able to tell how how a razor behaves without having to worry about how much comes from the blade. What comes next you read at your own risk *** *** I should place a warning here - if don't want to be in the market for another base plate / razor I would advice you to stop reading here. Good question and one that I at least got an insight into this morning as I used it for my morning shave. ![]() * Nerdy observation: Notice how the slit going down the side of the OC plate ends with a rather square ending but the SB has a more rounded one?īut, how does it shave - and how does the two base plate compare in actual use? The plate itself is safely stored inside a sealed plastic bag and accompanied by a branded blue piece of cloth. ![]() Presentation wise the base plate arrives in the usual, attractive black Timeless Razor box. With all that out of the way let's take a look at the new base plate. Once again - it's a subjective view so take that into consideration ![]() I will however also give a subjective comparison between the two base plates as they are as I know there are some people that felt that the OC plate was a bit too aggressive so this comparison might therefore be apt. The TR base plate that I received in 0.68mm is the scalloped safety bar model.Īs there will obviously be a difference between the base plates simply due to design differences (OC vs SB) I will try to focus on the differences that a decreased blade gap can result in. The TR base plate that I already own is their 0.95mm OC model. This write-up is to provide my personal first-impressions of this new base plate and I will be making some comparisons to their "Mid"-aggressive base plate (0.95mm). Introduced by TR this week here and you are now able to buy any of the three base plates with either 0.95 (Medium) or 0.68 (Mild) mm blade gap. This week I received one of the new base plates by - the 'milder' 0.68 mm blade gap version. ![]()
